HOW TO DISTINGUISH FLUTE TYPES OF CARDBOARD SHEETS AND CARTON BOXES

Carton products - carton packaging, also known as corrugated carton paper, corrugated carton boxes are created through a modern, high-tech production machinery line called a corrugated paper production line (can refer to the article Machinery - carton box production line on the page About us of this website). It is possible to create many different types of corrugated cardboard and carton boxes thanks to the application of corrugated types with different heights and wavelength distances.

Carton flute is one of the factors that directly affects and determines the quality, bearing capacity and force dispersion of the carton during use. Hopefully the basic information below will help you easily distinguish common types of carton flute in the production of various types of cartons - carton packaging to know the characteristics and applications of each type of flutes.

The common types of carton fulte:

There are 4 main types of flutes that create grooves and curves of cardboard: Flute A, Flute B,  Flute C and Flute E.

Characteristics and applications of flute types:

Flute A:

  • Advantages: Distributed force on the surface of the cardboard sheet from the top to bottom is the best among all types of flute (C flute is about 15% less and B flute is about 25%).
  • Disadvantages: Resistant to compression and horizontal puncture forces is worse than flute B, C, E
  • Application: Packing heavy goods for export such as: footwear, garments, food

Flute C:

  • Advantages: good resistance to force dispersion on the surface, only inferior to flute A. The most popular type of flute today is flute C, replacing most of flute A thanks to the groove being about 15% less than wave A. Good elasticity.

  • Disadvantages: Poor ability to withstand the dispersion force compare to flute A, poor resistance to penetration force compare to flute B and E.

  • Application: Most commonly used in the manufacturing and export industry.

Flute B:

  • Advantages:gives the best flat surface (about 50% more than flute A, and about 25% more than flute C), good penetration resistance.

  • Disadvantages: Less elasticity compare to flute C and A.

  • Application: Commonly used for die-cut carton boxes for fruit, cosmetics, and clothing.

Flute E:

  • Advantages: thin flute, compact, best resistant to horizontal stab force. Paired with a surface layer of paper for a flat, beautiful printing surface.

  • Disadvantages: Poor elasticity, cannot withstand dispersion force on the surface.

  • Application: E wave is a very thin type of flute, often used for boxes containing light goods, shipping cod, or wrapping.

The related defines:

Single flute cardboard sheet: is a cardboard sheet with a flute layer in the middle (can be A, B, C or E flute) and 2 layers of regular flat paper on the outside, also known as 3-layer corrugated paper.

3-layer carton box: manufactured from 3-layer cardboard sheet. More than 90% of all carton boxes are of this type. 3-layer carton box is used to store light weight goods, not too large in size.

Double corrugated board: is a cardboard sheet made from two layers of flute paper in the middle (usually a combination of two types of flute such as BC, BE, EC, AB, AC...) and two layers of flat paper on the outside (front and back), and a flat layer of paper in between 2 flute layers for a total of 5 layers, also known as 5-layer carton paper.

5-layer carton box: made from 5-layer cardboard, used to pack goods, home furniture, industrial machinery... has large volume and relatively large weight, high strength. Mainly used for packaging heavy goods and for export.

Seven-layer corrugated board: is a carton board with 3 layers of sinusoidal shaped waves in the middle and 2 flat paper on the outside and 2 flat layers of paper in the middle of flute layers joined together to form 7 layers of paper.

7-layer carton box: made from 7-layer cardboard, used to transport especially heavy and fragile goods with high strength and resistance to strong impacts, packing packages with strict requirements in terms of safety, preservation and long-distance transportation, for example: garments, wooden furniture, ceramics, exported fruits, etc.

Generally, the technology to produce A, B, C or E corrugated cardboard boxes has the same process. Product quality depends on the machinery and materials used.
