1/ What is Flexo printing technology?

Flexo printing (Flexographic) is a direct printing method because it has an embossed board made from rubber or polymer. Ink is fed to the mold using anilox rollers. When the plastic sheet is pressed into the material, the ink will transfer from the plastic sheet to the material. Each color required in the design is a separate sheet, when printed in sequence will create the final image.

Flexo printing method is a suitable choice for printing labels, stickers, packaging, carton boxes and can be printed on many special materials such as: fabric, cardboard or polymer film...

2/ The operating principle of Flexo printing machine
  • When starting the printing process, the anilox shaft will be dipped into the ink trough to receive ink. The ink will be transferred into small cells engraved on the surface of the shaft.
  • The printing mold will come into contact with the anilox shaft and receive ink from small cells containing ink on the surface of the printing shaft
  • Then, the ink will be printed directly on the surface of the printed product through the pressure of the printing press roller. From there, the images and information that need to be printed will be quickly embossed on the material.

3/ Advantages and disadvantages of Flexo printing method

Advantages:

  • Ink dries very quickly, saving time for the printing process.
  • Compared with digital printing technology, in printing in bulk, Flexo printing will save more money.
  • Print on many different materials such as PVC, PP, PE, wrap, polymer, film, etc.
  • The image quality is beautiful and uniform.

Disadvantages:

  • The price of a polymer mold is relatively high.
  • The printing time is fast but making printing mold before printing will take much time.
  • Unsuitable for printing small quantities.

4/ The process of making printing mold in Flexo printing technology

Making flexo printing mold is one of the most important steps before performing the printing process. Steps to create and complete printing mold include:

  • Design and process print files: prints will be designed and processed on software to create the most suitable outfilm copies, then saved as pdf files.
  • Making print molds: With this step, the data saved on the computer will be converted into suitable data on film with the support of film machines. Regular film copies are usually black and white. Normally, the film will have 4 colors representing 4 different films: C color (Cyan), M color (Magenta), Y color (Yellow) and K color (Key-Black).
  • Drying the printing plates: After the film plates are printed, they will be exposed to the sun under the influence of a zinc machine. At this time, the part to be printed will be photo-corroded and the remaining unprinted part will be retained.
  • Mount the shaft: mount the printing mold on the printer's rotating shaft.
